  Today, on the International Day of Care and Support , we recognize the millions of caregivers worldwide whose contributions often go unseen yet remain vital to inclusive and resilient communities . In Sri Lanka, IOM Sri Lanka and Maldives has supported the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) operated Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) in Ratnapura which helps aspiring care workers in the country migrate safely and confidently. In February 2025, we strengthened caregiver boosting at the MRC by upgrading equipment to improve their practical, market-relevant skills, boosting employability at home and abroad.

Care work, both paid and unpaid, is crucial to the future of decent work. Growing populations, ageing societies, changing families, women’s secondary status in labour markets and shortcomings in social policies demand urgent action on the organization of care work from governments, employers, trade unions and individual citizens. If not adequately addressed, current deficits in care service provision and its quality will create a severe and unsustainable global care crisis and increase gender inequalities at work. Care work consists of two overlapping activities: direct, personal and relational care activities, such as feeding a baby or nursing an ill partner; and indirect care activities, such as cooking and cleaning. Proclamation of October 29th as International Day of Care and Support Day.

The objectives of October 29th , World Care and Support Day is to ensure the right to care and to be cared for, the fair sharing of household tasks between men and women, and to raise awareness of the importance of care and that we all have free time to exercise human rights: health, leisure, quality work, political participation, etc.
